UGST 199: Tackling Texts
Tackling Texts focuses on developing effective approaches to reading at the university level. We will explore specific strategies for improving reading efficiency, comprehension, and recall. We will also review a variety of note-taking methods as well as techniques for incorporating academic sources into your own writing.

Wondering how to best structure your time for studying and coursework? Tackling Time focuses on setting goals, identifying priorities, and managing time. We will analyze how we currently use our time and whether this aligns with our values, and we will review specific strategies to improve efficiency and productivity. We will also explore barriers to effective time management such as procrastination.

What are some helpful ways to prepare for a test? Tackling Tests is designed to help students confront tests with confidence. This class aims to prepare students for university-level quizzes and exams across various disciplines and subjects. Over the course of the term, we will explore how learning works and develop strategies for comprehending, absorbing, and expressing new and difficult ideas. Along the way we’ll learn how to prepare for exam questions, cultivate productive habits, and create pathways to successfully study. Students will also discuss techniques for managing text anxiety.

Studying Science is designed to improve students’ understanding of materials and study strategies in the sciences. Through regular assignments, students will have the opportunity to practice new strategies in current courses. Students will explore an area of interest and develop science literacy skills through a final project.
